Information reaching Nigeriapen has it that a man, simply known as
Ubong, age 46 year old has died after allegedly consuming a local dry gin
drink popularly known as Ogogoro in Calabar south LGA of cross River State.
The incident was said to had occurred
at #42 Punch Street off, Victor Akan street, around Watt Market when the
deceased could not wake up due to the ethanol he consumed the previous
night.
According to DAILY POST, Chigozie
Friday, a spokesperson said he collected his six (6) month rent from his
tenants and decided to go on a drinking spree but never woke up the next
day.
He said, “He has a three room apartment
which he inherited as his share from their father’s property but decided
to give them all out for rent, he just collected the rent on one of them
for six months and decided to drink.
“We thought he was just sleeping as
usually but when we went close to him, that was when we discovered that he
was no longer breathing because he was not moving”.
Friday continued, “the incident even
caused panic among shop owners because people sell motor parts as an
extension of Bedwell street (Motor spare parts line).
“We locked up our shops and ran away
for fear of arrest and molestation by police. Later on his family members
came and carried his corpse because they didn’t want his corpse to be
taken away by Calabar Urban Development Authority (CUDA).
“A lot of people knew the deceased as a
drunkard but many of us didn’t know that he has a three room apartment and
was from a well to do family until they came and carried his corpse from
the scene of the incident,” he said.
In 2017 alone, more than 10 cases
nationwide were reported of people, especially men, dying from consuming this
locally brewed gin (Ogogoro). The situation were many die to have the Local
ethanol run down their guts is baffling as there’s no significance of it intake
yet.
