C’River Govt owes NYSC members several millions of naira

Cross River State government owed members of the National Youths Service Corps (NYSC) allowance amounting to several millions of naira. The allowance was not paid since 2017.
Further information has it that, Government also owed family of deceased workers in the state civil/public service arrears of benefit amounting to over N15million.
This was contained in the reports of the Finance and Appropriation Committee of the Cross River State House of Assembly signed by the Chairman, Rt. Hon. Eteng Jonah Williams.
According to DAILY POST, the Committee regretted that allowances of NYSC members have not been paid since 2017, “The committee however, wishes to observe that National Youth Service Corps members in the state have not been paid their monthly stipend since 2017”.
“…The recurrent expenditure of N297, 972, 866. 56 covers personnel cost including NYSC non-regular allowances, overhead cost and consolidated revenue charges.
“This is not healthy in view of the fact that this is National Orientation program as agreed and implemented by all states of the federation.
The Committee therefore recommends that this allowance be restored”.Similarly, payment of death benefits to deceased civil/public servants is in arrears of above N15 million.
“This payment is usually approved and released to enable the office provide a casket, pay for embalmment and provide transportation.
“Leaving all these to the bereaved families is not befitting of one who dies in active service. The committee recommends that this allowance should also be restored”.
