Anger erupted in a town in remote northeast Nigeria on February 22 after officials fumbled to account for scores of schoolgirls from the college who locals say have been kidnapped by Boko Haram jihadists.
Police said on February 21 that 111 girls from the college were unaccounted for following a jihadist raid late on February 19. Hours later, Abdullahi Bego, spokesman for Yobe state governor Ibrahim Gaidam, said “some of the girls” had been rescued by troops “from the terrorists who abducted them”.
But on a visit to Dapchi on Thursday, Gaidam appeared to question whether there had been any abduction.
Governor Masari disclosed this during the 3rd convocation ceremony of the Umaru Musa Yar’Adua University, UMYU, Katsina State.
The Governor said the action was a proactive measure by the state government taking into consideration the insecurity in the secondary schools across the country especially the boarding schools.
In his words: “Taking into consideration the present security situations across the country especially in the Boarding Secondary Schools, the state government has approved the employment of 1,000 watchmen for all the secondary schools in the state.”
It would be recalled that on the 19th February this year, about 110 school girls of Government Girls Technical Science College, Dapchi, Yobe State were abducted by the Boko Haram insurgents, out which 104 were reportedly released Wednesday from their captivity.
Precisely 14th April, 2014 over 200 Chibok school girls were also abducted in their hostels in Borno state by the insurgents.
